Steel Pipe Pile Cleaning – New Sydney Fish Markets

Steel Pipe Pile Cleaning: New Sydney Fish Markets

Client: SMC Marine | Location: New Sydney Fish Markets → Glebe Island, Sydney | Project Type: Contaminated Steel Pipe Cleaning – HPWJ & ACM Remediation

Silver Raven was engaged by SMC Marine to assist with the decontamination of steel pipe piles extracted from the seabed at the New Sydney Fish Markets construction site. Each pile measured approximately 15 meters in length and 1 meter in diameter, and had been removed and transported by barge to a temporary works area at Glebe Island for inspection and further processing. Following removal, SMC Marine identified that the internal cavities of the piles were possibly contaminated with asbestos-containing materials (ACM), as well as accumulated loose debris from their time in service.

Due to the hazardous nature of the contamination, Silver Raven was contracted to undertake specialist internal cleaning and remediation of the pipe piles to ensure they met safety and environmental standards prior to disposal or reuse. The work required a safe, thorough, and fully compliant cleaning solution that could operate within the confined interiors of the steel pipes.

To complete this task, Silver Raven deployed a custom-engineered High Pressure Water Jetting (HPWJ) system featuring a tank head configuration capable of high-impact horizontal internal cleaning while simultaneously containing and capturing contaminated debris. A bespoke centralising fixture was fabricated in-house to align and stabilise the HPWJ tank head within the narrow steel pipe bores. This ensured consistent 360-degree cleaning coverage along the entire internal length of each pipe, regardless of alignment or pipe ovality.

All operations were executed under strict handling protocols, including full waste containment, collection, and certified disposal. Silver Raven’s team adhered to occupational health and safety standards, environmental protection regulations, and industry best practices for working with contaminated industrial infrastructure.

The outcome was a complete success. All pipe piles were thoroughly cleaned, and hazardous materials were removed safely and effectively. The project was delivered on schedule and in full compliance with regulatory requirements, further demonstrating Silver Raven’s capability in hazardous material remediation, confined space hydro demolition, and industrial decontamination services across maritime and infrastructure environments.
