Indigenous Art Concrete Hydro Blasting – Bridge Upgrade

Client: Fulton Hogan | Location: Chifley Building, Sydney CBD | Concrete Removal – Structural Modifications

Silver Raven was engaged by Fulton Hogan to deliver a technically challenging and culturally significant infrastructure enhancement as part of the BR06 bridge upgrade from Newcastle to Jesmond. The project involved the integration of Indigenous artworks into the concrete bridge structure using hydro blasting—a specialised form of non-destructive surface treatment.

Fulton Hogan commissioned renowned Aboriginal artist to create traditional designs to reflect the cultural heritage of the area. Silver Raven was tasked with developing a complete methodology to translate this vision onto existing bridge surfaces using high-pressure hydro demolition.

Our team engineered custom steel stencils specifically designed to be retrofitted onto vertical and overhead concrete surfaces. These stencils were tested in-house at Silver Raven’s dedicated R&D yard to ensure durability, scabble depth and visual clarity when exposed to hydro blasting. Once validated, the solution was rolled out on-site.

Installation was performed using elevated work platforms (EWPs) and scissor lifts, requiring high-risk working at heights next to live traffic. Silver Raven’s technicians carried out all hot works, including steel grinding and surface prep, in compliance with safety and environmental standards. To minimise disruption and maximise safety, hydro blasting was conducted during night shifts in collaboration with professional traffic control teams.

The project is currently progressing with stencil installations during daytime hours and hydro blasting at night, section by section. All stencils have been fabricated, with the installation and blasting phase ongoing.

This project exemplifies Silver Raven’s capability to deliver innovative civil and remedial solutions in complex environments. By combining industrial methods with cultural storytelling, Silver Raven continues to lead in hydro demolition, engineered access solutions, and artistic concrete surface treatments.
