What Is Surface Preparation? | UHP Water Jet Profiling for Durable Coatings

High‑pressure water jetting, either Ultra‑High Pressure (UHP) or High Pressure (HP), used in surface preparation (like scabbling, coating removal, or rust cleaning) efficiently removes weak or contaminated material and leaves a clean, roughened surface that significantly improves adhesion for repair or overlay applications.
This method generates no dust, no vibration, and no microfractures, ensuring the structural integrity of the substrate is preserved, unlike traditional mechanical or chemical approaches.
By keeping embedded reinforcement (e.g. rebar) intact and even cleaning it during preparation, it eliminates the need for additional steps like sandblasting, saving time and cost.
Surface preparation via hydrodemolition produces a textured, mechanically bonded profile which enhances bond strength between new materials and the substrate, leading to long-lasting, durable repairs.

Benefits of Hydro-Demolition

Surface preparation can be completed using manual lancing or remote operated robots. We have experience in providing the following surface preparations:

Concrete Slab Scabbling

Scabbling is the preparation of an existing or damaged surface to allow for secondary product adhesion. Scabbling increases the effective adhesion of the existing surfaces and removes any loose, spalling, or honeycombed surface issues.

Our high-pressure units can efficiently remove 20mm of material (effective depth for scabbling) without creating any dust or compromising the structural integrity of the structure.

Applications for scabbling works include:
