Recent developments in the NSW region have seen a dramatic increase in the use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) to deliver large infrastructure network projects. Silver Raven has been regularly engaged to assist in the complex and time-sensitive task of unblocking TBMs when they have become immobile using high-pressure water jetting (HPWJ).
These massive machines, vital for subterranean construction, encountered unforeseen blockages deep within the tunnel system, halting progress. Silver Raven’s team has been called in for their reputation in swift problem-solving, operational flexibility under pressure and experience in this task. We are familiar with shield and cutter head impingement, as well as other causes of TBM immobilisation.
Each instance has required on-the-spot innovation, as traditional methods of unblocking such as explosive excavation or mechanical means were too slow or otherwise inadequate for the unique circumstances, potentially causing catastrophic damage to the TBM. Silver Raven’s team of experienced engineers acted hastily, developing customised, innovative solutions utilising our years of experience and specialisation in hydro demolition. This has led to the successful unblocking of TBMs without causing damage to the machines or the tunnel structure.
The project required meticulous planning due to the complexity of the bridge’s structure, heritage considerations and the need to minimise disruptions to pedestrians and daily traffic. The Silver Raven team managed scaffolding to install sensors inside the bridge as well as traffic control during the night which involved a full road closure for sensors installed underneath the bridge using Elevated Work Platforms.
With Silver Raven’s experience and expertise in executing civil projects, we successfully completed the installation, providing TfNSW with essential data to support proactive maintenance and ensure the longevity of this iconic structure.
